Some Thoughts on Discernment

To discern what God wants us to do with our lives, we can:

  • Believe
  • Listen
  • Trust

First, believe that God loves you very much! God wants your good, your peace and your happiness. Remember God said, " My grace is enough for you, for in weakness power reaches perfection. And so I willingly boast of my weaknesses instead, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. : (2 Cor. 12:9-10) God desires to work through our goodness and our weakness.

The second aspect in the discernment process is to listen to the movements of God's Spirit. The Spirit speaks to us in the many events of our daily lives. God is continually speaking to us through people, events, nature, a book, music, a film, reflection, prayer, liturgy and scripture. Can we listen and respond?

Finally, we must respond to the call of God in trust.  Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is a woman who believed,  listened and then trusted. Mary could not understand the message of the angel, but she did trust. She said, "Let it be done to me as you say."

This is a process that takes time and prayer. Listen to your heart, speak to someone who knows you well, pray often to know what God wants you to do. With time, patience, desire and readiness the sense of your vocation will be revealed. Jesus never said it would be easy but He did say :

I WILL BE WITH YOU!
